How High Up Can You Use A Capo On A Guitar?

The highest you can place the capo on a guitar is:

  • Acoustic Guitar: 11th Fret
  • Electric Guitar: 15th Fret

WHY ONLY THIS HIGH

The physical limitations on how high you can use a capo on a guitar depends on the neck of the guitar’s shape. Towards the higher frets where the neck meets the body of the guitar, The shape of the neck changes and gets wider. This is to help make connecting the body to the neck solid. At the same time, it makes putting a capo on any higher than around the ones list above almost impossible.

DO YOU HAVE A CUTAWAY?

Something else to consider when placing a capo this high is if your guitar has a cutaway. A cutaway is the missing area of the body of the guitar, next to the higher frets, so that you can reach higher frets. Though it is not impossible to play on the higher frets without a cutaway, it does make it a little bit more difficult and awkward.
