No, it does not mean you do not know what you are doing. Many professional musicians use capos in their playing. Songs are written that require the use the a capo or it will not sound exactly like the song. Here are a couple of reasons why using a capo is a needed thing:
IT HAS A CERTAIN SOUND
When you put a capo on and play the same notes and/or chords, you are instantly in a different key. There is a certain character to the sound in different keys. The following are somethings you will find when you change the key to a song:
CREATES A BIGGER SOUND
Let’s take the scenario of one player using a capo and another player not using a capo. Their sound added together will create a bigger sound. This is because the same chord played with and without a capo (with one of them transposed to the same key) has notes that are arranged differently. This creates one big chord that one player could not do on their own.
USING IT AS A BEGINNER
Beginners can use it as a stepping stone to be able to learn easy versions of songs now and grow into harder versions of songs later. We are all learning at different paces and can easily say one person does not know how to do or know about certain things. I say whether you are a beginner or a pro, learn something new all the time!
